3 years away from SA and upon returning I knew which dentist I wanted. Still 3 years later Dr Riley and his office are professional and friendly! Office follows updated treatment options and even is a platinum invisalign provider. Never felt rushed or pressured into treatment. The staff is so courteous from the minute you walk inside. Saw Dr Riley and Dr Mo today, both with excellent bedside manner and heart.
Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Feb 10, 2019Previous reviewReferred by my dad (haha yes I know, parents always think their docs are the best) but I love this place! Very welcoming environment from the moment you walk in. Keurig coffee maker and chilled bottle waters in the waiting room. Easy online or in person new patient forms. My first visit was to establish as a new patient and able to get a teeth cleaning on the spot. Got a referral credit too! Get the whitening (there's a Check-In offer on Yelp)! Dr Upton is my dentist here and although he looks 20, he's very professional and honest about any necessary or unnecessary tooth needs. A week later I came in for removal of my wisdom teeth (which I opted for the conscious sedation in the form of laughing gas and oral sedation). The staff was still just as courteous as previously mentioned. Not sure what took place for the negative reviews and I get that people normally only remember the ill times. Just wanna let everyone know of a GREAT time and that's not even the best part.
A few days after my tooth removal I received a HAND WRITTEN greeting card that thanked me for my business and it was really sweet. Living in a technologically savvy age it's easy for a business to send out e-vites or e-cards but New Heights is bringing it back OG style! Please just try them out and see for yourself! Newly remodeled office space that feels homey and gets you singing along to your favorite songs proudly played on the in office speakers (I'm talking new wave 80s, 90s, throwbacks, you name it).
Did I mention the essential oil infused hand towels provided after your cleaning? Um yes! - Carla S.San Antonio, TX077Mar 31, 2023
Out of the few dental offices I have treated at, New Heights and dental has been by far THE BEST. As soon as you walk into the lobby, you're greeted by the staff. The lobby smells great and it is very clean! Everyone gives of the best vibes! My mother is the one who recommended this business to me and she loves it.

The incompetency of the system and front desk personnel has ended my relationship with this company for my needs.
It's such a shame the terrible communication and system redundancies do an injustice to how great I've found the actual hygienist & dentists to be. The only reason they get a 2 star is because the actual professionals I dealt with were great.
If you can get past the front counter you'll likely have a great experience, it's dealing with everything else that I find extremely lacking.
For me, I'm tired of wasting my time communicating to no effect and doing their job for them. When I had coverage I had to be the liaison between the company and the dental office to get anything done. Once I dropped my coverage it was a CONSTANT issue that they kept calling me to get the new coverage information. Every Single Appointment.
Each time, I would patiently explain I didn't have any. Somehow the next appt it was the same question. Annoying but I could handle it if it was the only oversight.
My dental check-up today was scheduled months in advance from my last appt to make sure everything was good and my gums were healthy.
On 9/9/19 I received a text to confirm my appt or call if any questions. I called and spoke to someone, once again having to inform them I had no insurance to update. I confirmed the details of the appt, the time, and the estimated cost for services if they felt a cleaning was necessary. Feeling confident my appt was sufficiently confirmed. I received another text confirming my appt was scheduled ( with no requirement noted that I still needed to confirm the appt).
Today after signing in, I'm called to the desk to be told I'm not on the schedule. That because they called me on Friday to confirm my appt but didn't speak to me I was removed. Seriously?!
How many times do I have to confirm the same appt?
I'm done. I'll find a competent office to take care of my and my daughters future needs.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Mar 29, 2019Previous reviewDr. Gomez is that amazing type of person that makes you forgive him for being a dentist. His relaxed demeanor made a 4 tooth extraction over 1.5 hours feel a little less like my own personal hell. His dental assistant was very nice too and the whole office had a sitcom type vibe to their interactions.
I found the prices reasonable and they gave me a Free 2nd opinion exam and x-ray for my tooth removal. On top of that I got 5% discount for prepaying the cost of my service at time of scheduling.
So why not 5 stars?
Well, it is a dental office. J/k
Seriously? Honest answer: some of the front desk staff seems a little less connected, efficient, and knowledgeable than I'd like.
If I was basing if my interactions with the front desk alone it'd be a 50/50 chance on if I'd bothered to have come back, good prices or not. - Keith S.San Antonio, TX166046Aug 30, 2019Updated review
The last week in August I receive a bill from February with a balance due. The statement stated that I was seriously past due and needed to pay immediately. I contacted the business office and was told it was a computer glitch. Well . . . that would all work EXCEPT the very same happened to me the previous year where I was assured this would be addressed and never repeated! The charge is for x-rays that they took. They did not advise me that these x-rays would not be covered by my insurance and the were completely unnecessary as I was just there for a routine cleaning and had just had x-rays taken 6 months prior. I'm assuming that when they take the x-rays that it is included in my insurance. If it is not, then I should have given my consent prior to the x-rays being taken.
The billing office could care less. She first said the $55 charge was for fluoride treatment that I opted for. I told her, "No, I paid the $20 co-pay for that at the time of treatment." Then she told me it was for X-rays. I called back to cancel my upcoming cleaning appointment. The receptionist couldn't have been kinder, profusely apologizing for what has happened and stating how much they wanted to keep me as a patient. She stated she would remove the charge and that they are having trouble finding/keeping someone to do the billing, so the sent it out to third party.
Well, when you send it out, knowing your billing is in arrears, you make sure your third party sends an explanatory note to your patients. I think what is most disappointing is that I had this full conversation with Dr. Riley the last time this occurred. Evidently he is unwilling or unable to implement changes.
Again, I can't offer enough praise for the receptionist for appointments. She was sincere and nice. I wouldn't give you two cents for the billing lady. She could care less - just pay the bill.
Dr. Riley, I'm sorry that you have chosen not to implement the changes you assured me you would take. You seem to have chosen your billing company over your patients. I loved New Heights Dental, but I'm not going to go through this every year.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Oct 6, 2017Previous reviewOkay. I now have to modify my comments. Dr. Riley did call me finally. He explained how this debacle came about and actually offered to credit my account for the amount due. I refused his offer because he is definitely entitled to be paid for services performed. He was very apologetic and completely heard me out and my frustration with this event. He assured me that going forward, he and his staff would implement changes to prevent this from happening again. Mistakes happen. Could this have been handled better? Yes! But I truly believe Dr. Riley understood that as well and that he will work with his staff to make sure it is handled differently in the future. You know what I was most upset about? I love this dental office! The staff and Dr. Riley are awesome. I hope that the office manager will modify her approach with unhappy patients. So I'm happy that this is resolved and I will be able to continue to refer and recommend and use this dental office. Good dentists are hard to find! Thank you Dr. Riley!
Oct 4, 2017Previous reviewI'm very disappointed. I will never return. I prepaid for a lot of work to be done. I had the work done and was very satisfied. I had a cleaning since then and paid my balance of what the insurance did not cover. The majority of my work was done in February and March. My insurance paid the doctor on March 27, 2017. On September 22, 2017, I receive a bill for $295.00 stating that I was over 90 days late paying and that if I didn't pay soon, it would be turned over for collections. This was the first I was hearing of a balance due. I called the office right away and I was told I would need to speak to the office manager, Sherry (sp?). I asked if they would please have the office manager call me. On September 29, 2017, after hearing nothing from the office, I called and was able to speak to the office manager. She informed me that their billing system accidentally did not bill for 4 months. So if they got paid March 27th, and this is September 22nd, isn't that 6 months? How can an office manager not realize that they were not receiving payments for services rendered for 4 months let alone 6? I requested to speak to Dr. Riley about the performance of his Office Manager and I was informed that Dr. Riley does not speak to patients about billing issues. Well, Dr. Riley, you had a chance to save a patient, but I guess I didn't matter enough to you. Even when I had gone in for a cleaning, nothing was stated to me about a balance due. Dr. Riley will always tell you to please give a good rating if you were happy with the service, and I did. Dr. Riley, you have to be able to address the bad with the good and your unwillingness to do so demonstrates why you push so hard for your patients to leave good ratings and are constantly handing out referral cards to give away to drum up new patients. Why? Because you are probably losing good patients like me because of your office staff's inability or incompetence to properly serve your patients. Sherry is very cold, indifferent and is doing you an incredible amount of harm. Oh, the good news is she told me I would get three bill before they sent it to collections! How about this Sherry, when you realized the oversight, why didn't you send a letter of explanation with your billing. A letter of explanation and apology would have gone a long way to heading these things off. But, that is something a competent office manager would think to do. Dr. Riley is very friendly. All of his staff, with the exception of his office manager, are very friendly. It is such a shame that you are not willing to hear directly from your patients, Dr. Riley. What a shame!
Feb 14, 2017Previous reviewMy first visit: all the staff including the doctor were very professional and pleasant. My hygienist was thorough and efficient. The dentist thoroughly explained my recommended treatment plan. Afterwards I was informed of the charges I could expect and my payment options and ways to receive a discount. I'm looking forward to my follow up visits.
Second visit: I have found my dental home! Filling replaced without an ounce of pain. Quick and efficient! This is a place for upsell dentistry in 78209. Always the sales pitch! Big hard sell pitch for high ticket veneers "we give you the big gas so you sleep through it all" but they have no track record in a successful veneers - very odd sales technique for a dentist. Keep looking for another dentist.

Can't said enough of how good they are, everyone is very welcoming, from the moment you step in, until you step out. First time I came for a cleaning, I knew I needed more than a regular cleaning and they were very accurate on telling me exactly what I needed, then I followed up with regular cleanings after that, then they do reccomend me to start orthodontic work ( and again I knew that since I was little) so I decided to get it done and is been great! My teeth are looking so good and I feel way more confident with my smile. I don't call this upselling, because they actually tell you what you need, if you pay attention to your mouth you'll know it. They care about their patients, that's why I'll keep coming here and reccomend with everyone.

OVERALL (5-stars)
I feel that my overall experience deserved 5-stars due to the actual professionalism and expertise of the dental hygienist who cleaned my teeth, and her assistants. Her service from beginning to end definitely made up for some small things that occurred at check-in time. For that I want to send out a much deserved, "THANK YOU" to a very professional, patient, and expert hygienist -- "Christina" for taking such great care of me and my son.
WAITING ROOM (3-1/2 stars)
The waiting room is stylishly decorated with modern seating, a mini fridge full of bottled water, and a Keurig. However, I found the furniture arrangement a bit disconcerting. After opening the door to the waiting room to enter, I was greeted by two chairs back to back, set in the center of the floor. I had to walk around them to make it to the desk, and it left me wondering how awkward it would have been if they had been occupied by waiting patients. The waiting room is a bit narrow, so I can see how that arrangement may be the only way those extra chairs could be added, but I definitely found it awkward.
CHECK-IN (3-1/2 stars)
Admittedly, things were a bit confusing at check-in, as I guess I was supposed to do a bit more to arrange the delivery of my x-rays from my former provider; however, the staff was eager to help and worked around that situation until I could get in touch with my former dentist to have the x-rays sent over. NHD explained that they'd recommend that we wait to have my records sent over, so that I wouldn't repeat any services that I'd already received, and avoid being charged by my insurance provider. I definitely felt as if they were looking out for my best interests, despite any inconveniences to their scheduling.
E-DOCUMENTS & E-SIGN (4-stars)
I completed the necessary 'paperwork' on an iPad, which was convenient and easy -- very user-friendly. Then, I was called up to the front to sign after verbally listening to more policies. I would recommend that a very simple "what to expect" be given to each new patient when they arrive -- something like, "So, we will have you fill out the majority of the paperwork on the iPad, then call you up to have you e-sign a couple of additional items. Once that is completed, we will be calling you back right away." I am not an audible learner, and would have appreciated a screen to look at while the receptionist read the document that I was expected to sign.
CLEANING & TREATMENT (5+++ stars)
Since this is what really matters, I've decided that this is the most important piece and what I based the 5-stars overall on. The dental tech was polite and professional, and she quickly answered all of my questions. Once my x-rays were completed, I was greeted by a polite, confident, and professional dental hygienist, named Christina, who proceeded to examine and clean my teeth. She used some really amazing new technology, which really expedited the process. Rather than slowly, hand-scraping coffee stains from my teeth, she employed a dental pressure-washer of sorts, that essentially cut the time in half -- not to mention the icky, scraping sounds, and feelings from hand-scraping.
EXPLANATION OF BENEFITS AND CHARGES (5+ stars)
Once she was finished, the dentists came right in and confirmed that I did need a filling. When I requested to have an appointment for that ASAP, they were happy to accommodate me early the following week without question. Additionally, another front office staff member was at the ready to explain what my charges for the filling were going to look like. She broke down the explanation of benefits, and what they expected the insurance to cover and what I was expected to pay out of pocket. I found this very helpful, and appreciated the detail. The staff member covering this portion of my visit was also professional and engaging, and I really enjoyed my conversation with her as well, despite the fact that I don't remember her name.

It is always difficult to hear someone had a bad experience in our office. We take all patient concerns very seriously. We strive for the total satisfaction of everyone who visits us, and our goal is to provide a positive experience. It is not our intention to make anyone feel "Judged" and we are saddened that is how you felt. As dental professionals it is our duty to the public to inform and educate patients on how to keep their smiles healthy for a lifetime and that is what we do with every patient who comes into our office. As far as the scheduling issues with Dr. Riley, we have contacted our scheduling software company and have resolved some errors on their end to hopefully prevent any other patients from being scheduled when the requested provider is not available. If you would like to discuss any further issues, please contact our office manager Shari @ 210-828-5300.
